2017 All-Star Opt In/Out

Dear Parents:

Each year, the Los Alamitos Girls Softball League, through its coaches, nominates and elects All Star teams. Typically, there are two All Star teams within the 8u & 10u divisions and based on our numbers this year, we will likely have 1 team each for 12u & 14u divisions.

Before the coaches nominate the players in each division, they need to know which players and families are interested in being considered to represent LAGSL. This letter and form are to give all players the opportunity to opt in or opt out of consideration for the All-Star play.

The following is a brief synopsis of player selection:

  • The coaches from each division will have a meeting with their respective commissioner. At this meeting, each coach will discuss the players on their respective teams.

  • Each coach will be advised of which players would like to be considered for All Star nomination and possible selection, based upon the parent completion and submission of the attached form.

  • Coaches will be instructed to watch as many games as possible so they can familiarize themselves with the players who indicated they would like to be eligible for nomination.

  • Coaches will submit a list of 25 players, in the order of the most deserving, to the league president and respective division commissioner. The coach does not vote for his/her own players. The list is confidential.

  • All Star teams are selected on or after May 1st.

The commitment for All Stars generally lasts from early May to the beginning of July.  Practices are held during the week and can be on weekends at the manager’s discretion. Many managers choose to practice daily leading up to the first tournament.

Each team may have two out of town tournaments (San Diego and Simi Valley) and four in the local area. All teams may also participate in districts with the possibility of playing in the State and National tournaments.  Dates and tournaments are subject to change.

The financial commitment is estimated to be about $750 per player for 1st time All Stars (uniform, gear & registration fee), additional travel costs and lodging expenses should be considered as well and are estimated at about $500 per weekend of travel.  If teams continue to qualify for additional tournaments, there may be additional hotel & travel costs.  Teams are encouraged to procure sponsors to defray costs for each participating family.

All Star Participation Consideration Form

Eligibility under American Softball Association (ASA) guidelines:

  • Must play a minimum of 50% of the current season’s league games.

  • Cannot have participated on a travel ball type team after March 31, 2017. ASA defines participation as “a player taking part in a try-out, practice, practice game, scheduled game, or tournament.”

In addition, LAGSL requires the following:

  • All Star players must be available to play in 4-5+ tournaments during the All Star Season, with all teams playing districts, and possibly playing states and nationals. Players will have to be available on the following dates: May 19-21, May 26-29, June 2-4, June 9-11, and June 16-18.  B Districts will be June 23-25.

    Must qualify for the following tournaments:

  • C States will be June 30-July 2, B States will be July 7-9 in Lancaster, CA.

  •  8U California State Games is July 14-16 in San Diego.  

  • 10U Nationals is 7/23-30 in Boise, ID.  

  • 12U Nationals is 7/31-8/6 in Portland, OR.

  • 14U Nationals is 8/1-7 in Roseville, CA 

  • Mandatory: all players must be available for uniform sizing. Sunday, May 7th, 2017 @ Rush Park from 5-7 PM.  Please save the date...time subject to change.

It is important that our league know if your daughter has participated in any way on a travel type team. Players can participate in travel ball between January 1, 2017 and March 31, 2017 and still participate in All Stars. However, as a league we cannot have more than four players on the same All Star team who fall into that category. Anyone that participates with a travel team in any way after April 1, 2017 is ineligible for All-star participation.
