The CYC Chess Program runs November-February. The program consists of practices and four official meets. These meets are on Saturdays at local parishes where kids are paired with players their age and play 4 matches. The participant will get rated and as they progress through the program, they will be paired with other participants with similar ratings. This helps make the program more fun for everyone involved.
Generally speaking, it is good if the participant knows the basics of chess. The different pieces, how they can move, what is check vs checkmate. The chess skills vary though where some kids are learning basic strategies while others are more advanced. We work on different strategies during practices. There are also some great online programs too to help advance someone's skill.
Another great resource is the Chess Club of St Louis. Depending on your participants' level of interest, they do offer memberships and classes.
The cost for the CYC chess program this year is $75. There will be an optional pullover for another ~$40.
