Please communicate this information with the coach of your team. There is an expectation to attend practices but we also understand some athletes play other sports and/or play for the Selah Middle School for 7th-8th grade Football Teams and must miss practice time for games. Both programs support one another and encourage athletes to participate in what meets their development needs. For some athletes that means choosing between the two programs and for some gaining experience helps to play both. The Jr. Vikings are in communication with the SMS coaches and balance participation for athletes to ensure athletes can play for both teams safely. Those athletes that play for both typically go on a reduced contact/workload schedule. Multiple athletes over the years have played for both programs and have been successful. In some cases, the athletes focuses on defense at the SMS and focus on offense with the Jr. Vikings, or vise versa it depends on the athlete. Both programs have great coaching staffs and there are benefits to both programs.
Yes, all volunteers must register and complete background checks through the team page. Coaches are not permitted to coach at any capacity until background checks and USA Football tackle Certifications are complete
Yes, outside of rookie tackle 2nd/3rd which is combined age groups. All other groups are by grade. Athletes can play up but can not play down. All athletes are encouraged to come out and the coaches will work to find a role for every athlete to participate and grow.
Rookie Tackle is the "bridge" between non-contact flag and tackle football. There is a reduced number of athletes on the field with a concentrated emphasis on techniques and fundamentals. Coaches are on the field providing instructions and support. The Jr Vikings coaching staff have coached this style with the D team in the previous league and more than prepared to provide a safe environment for athletes to learn and grow.
Travel will be similar to when we played in the previous league. Previouslly as the the Tomahawks we traveled to places like Wapato, Grandview, Ellensburg and played at SOZO in Union Gap. Moving forward there will be more home game opportunities right here in Selah, Washington! The goal is to have 3 or 4 home games. Each team location will have its own fields with stands to allow families to sit and enjoy thier athletes in a safe and controlled environment.
Yes, we are Vikings! Jr. Vikings Head Coach AG has met with the Selah HS Head Coach Haste. The Jr. Vikings will be implementing some of the core philosophies ran on Friday nights. You'll still see some of the Tomahawk play calls that have been successful over the years as well. We're excited about this for our athletes.
