What is Shetland 6U
Shetland 6U is an instructional baseball league for very young players (ages 3–6). The goal is to teach fundamentals, catching, throwing, batting, fielding, base running in a fun, low-pressure environment. Coaches are allowed on the field during games to instruct, and each player gets a chance to play different positions and participate in every game.
Philosophy / Approach
Because players at this age range often have short attention spans and are new to the sport, Shetland 6U emphasizes FUN, learning, and basic motor skills not competition or winning championships. Games move quickly, and coaches help introduce the very basics, like knowing first base from third base, or left field from right field.
Field & Game Specifications
Base paths: 50 ft.
Bases and plates use regulation-size equipment (home plate, pitcher’s rubber/line, bases).
Outfield “home run” boundary: recommended 150 ft down the foul lines, 200 ft to center (with a fence or marked line). Balls hit beyond that distance on the fly count as home runs (or use a minimum 125 ft / max 200 ft home run line if needed).
Participation & Inclusion
Every child plays in every game. There’s no reason to “bench” younger or less experienced kids the focus is on participation and exposure. Coaches rotate players through different positions so kids get a well-rounded experience.
Why Shetland 6U matters
It’s often the first time a young child is exposed to baseball or team sports. By keeping things simple and fun with tee-ball rather than live pitching, Shetland 6U builds foundational skills, helps kids gain confidence, and fosters teamwork, discipline, and love for the game. For many, this is the start of a lifelong baseball journey.
