What is Shetland 6U for Softball

Shetland 6U provides an entry-level, instructional league for very young players (ages 3–6), focused on introducing the basic skills of softball hitting, throwing, catching, fielding, base running in a fun, inclusive setting. Coaches may be on the field to provide encouragement and guidance. The emphasis is on learning and participation rather than competition.

Philosophy / Approach

Given the age and developmental stage of the players, games are simplified, paced to hold their attention, and designed to make the first softball experience positive and rewarding. Coaches help children understand positions and rules. Players are given the chance to rotate through different positions and everyone gets to play each game.

Field & Game Specifications

For fast-pitch softball in Shetland 6U: base paths are 55 ft; pitching distance is 40 ft; recommended fence distance is 150–175 ft

For slow-pitch softball: base paths are 50 ft; pitching distance remains 40 ft; recommended fence distance still 150–175 ft.

Participation & Inclusion

Every child should get playing time no child sits on the bench for an entire game. Coaches help ensure rotation through various positions and provide guidance throughout. This gives young players a broad exposure to the game and helps nurture early enthusiasts of softball.

Why Shetland 6U matters

Softball, especially for young girls, can often start later than baseball, but the Shetland 6U division gives a gentle, age-appropriate introduction. It helps kids build fundamental softball skills, fosters teamwork and sportsmanship, and most importantly makes the early experience about fun, learning, and love for the game rather than competition.
