What is Foal 4U

Foal 4U is the introductory, co-ed division for the youngest players (ages 3–4). It’s designed to give toddlers and preschoolers a gentle, fun first experience with baseball focusing on very basic skills: catching, throwing, batting off a tee, fielding and base running while emphasizing fun, inclusion, and a love for the game

Philosophy / Approach

The primary goal is participation, not competition. These games are about joy, learning, teamwork, sportsmanship, and gaining comfort on the field.

Coaches (and even parents) are encouraged to be on the field to help guide the kids, coach base-running or fielding, and generally ensure a safe and supportive environment.

Because players are very young and may be unfamiliar with basic concepts like first base vs. third base, or left vs. right field, the league keeps things extremely simple and clear.

Field & Game Specifications

Base paths: 50 ft.

Pitching is not “live” instead, hitting is off a tee.

Defensive play is simplified: outfielders are positioned back to give infielders room and reduce pressure on the kids.

Participation & Inclusion

All players present get to bat (batting order is called, so every child gets a turn).

Player rotation is used so kids can try different positions over time.

The emphasis is on teaching not on keeping score or winning. Indeed, many leagues using Foal 4U make the season non-competitive (no scores are kept for standings or championships).

Why Foal 4U matters

Foal 4U gives very young children, many of whom have never held a bat or glove before, a safe, welcoming, and age-appropriate first step into baseball/softball. It builds coordination, hand-eye skills, basic athleticism, and helps foster early love for the game. It also introduces the concepts of teamwork, sportsmanship, and being part of a team in a low-pressure way. For many, Foal 4U is the beginning of a lifelong association with the sport. Also, not to mention its just adorable and so fun to watch!
